Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow is a perfect example of self-reliance, nonconformity, and optimism. Thoreau believed in these three things very strongly. Most people know about Tebow's on-field success, but not many know about his off-field success. Tebow has done countless amounts of mission work. He has done things such as preaching in a school of 10,000 high school students in Digos, Mindanao. He takes summer trips to the Philippines and does mission work there. Tebow walked a brain tumor patient down the red carpet to the College Football Awards Ceremony after finding out that she just wanted to see him there. He spoke with her family and her for over 45 minutes, then asked her to walk the carpet with him. The way Tebow was able to balance all this while being arguably the best player in college football is amazing. It shows an incredible amount of self-reliance that it took for him to persevere. It also shows nonconformity, while every other big star was most likely acting better than everyone else, Tebow was going into the real world and helping people whenever he could. What he did for the brain tumor patient is a great example of optimism and how Tebow was able to change her life and help to give her hope. He also instills hope into every child that he did mission work for. Thoreau strongly believed in those three traits, and would be very proud that an all-star football player took tons of time out of his life to help give power to people and give them hope.

Palestinians Practice Non-Violent Resistance In Bilin

Palestinian people, from the village of Bilin, have had an ongoing nonviolent protest every Friday for five years. They protest in resistance in Israeli occupation. The Palestinians refer to these protests as non violent resistance. The Israeli's call them riots and have arrested a few of the leaders. Israeli's have thrown tear gas and use many other methods in attempt to contain these protests. Israel has built a wall which is blocking off 60 percent of the villages fields. Palestine has also began boycotting Israeli products and good. The Palestinian people believe they are strongly affecting Israel and that Israel will also being trying to stop the boycotts. Thoreau would be very proud of the Palestinian people and the people of Bilin. They are showing the whole world of nonviolent resistance. By their persistence they also show great optimism. They are not doing anything violent and are even freely being taken to jail for what they believed in. These are all examples that Thoreau would have done too.

Lupe Fiasco Words I Never Said Lyrics

[Skylar Grey]
It’s so loud Inside my head
With words that I should have said!
As I drown in my regrets
I can’t take back the words I never said
I can’t take back the words I never said

[Lupe Fiasco]
I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit
Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets
How much money does it take to really make a full clip
9/11 building 7 did they really pull it
Uhh, And a bunch of other cover ups
Your childs future was the first to go with budget cuts
If you think that hurts then, wait here comes the uppercut
The school was garbage in the first place, thats on the up and up
Keep you at the bottom but tease you with the uppercrust
You get it then they move you so you never keeping up enough
If you turn on TV all you see’s a bunch of “what the f-cks”
Dude is dating so and so blabbering bout such and such
And that aint Jersey Shore, homie thats the news
And these the same people that supposed to be telling us the truth
Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist
Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit
Thats why I aint vote for him, next one either
I’ma part of the problem, my problem is I’m peaceful
And I believe in the people.

[Skylar Grey]
It’s so loud inside my head
With words that I should have said!
As I drown in my regrets
I can’t take back the words I never said
I can’t take back the words I never said

[Lupe Fiasco - Verse 2]
Now you can say it aint our fault if we never heard it
But if we know better than we probably deserve it
Jihad is not a holy war, wheres that in the worship?
Murdering is not Islam!
And you are not observant
And you are not a muslim
Israel don’t take my side cause look how far you’ve pushed them
Walk with me into the ghetto, this where all the Kush went
Complain about the liquor store but what you drinking liquor for?
Complain about the gloom but when’d you pick a broom up?
Just listening to Pac aint gone make it stop
A rebel in your thoughts, aint gon make it halt
If you don’t become an actor you’ll never be a factor
Pills with million side effects
Take em when the pains felt
Wash them down with Diet soda!
Killin off your brain cells
Crooked banks around the World
Would gladly give a loan today
So if you ever miss payment
They can take your home away!

[Skylar Grey]
It’s so loud inside my head
With words that I should have said!
As I drown in my regrets
I can’t take back the words I never said, never said
I can’t take back the words I never said

[Lupe Fiasco - Verse 3]
I think that all the silence is worse than all the violence
Fear is such a weak emotion thats why I despise it
We scared of almost everything, afraid to even tell the truth
So scared of what you think of me, I’m scared of even telling you
Sometimes I’m like the only person I feel safe to tell it to
I’m locked inside a cell in me, I know that there’s a jail in you
Consider this your bailing out, so take a breath, inhale a few
My screams is finally getting free, my thoughts is finally yelling through

[Skylar Grey]
It’s so loud Inside my head
With words that I should have said!
As I drown in my regrets
I can’t take back the words I never said

Lupe Fiasco's song "Words I Never Said" strongly represents transcendentalist ideas and closely relates to Thoreau. Thoreau believed in nonconformity, self-reliance and nonviolent resistance and this song is a great example of these. The first three lines, "I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit, Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets, How much money does it take to really make a full clip," show right off the start that Lupe Fiasco is not afraid to call out the government and speak his mind, which is a great example of nonviolent resistance. Lupe Fiasco shows his nonviolent resistance in the lines "Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit, Thats why I aint vote for him, next one either." Lupe Fiasco is saying that if politics don't address the things they are supposed to address, then there is no way that they will get his vote. In the next line, Lupe Fiasco says "I’m a part of the problem, my problem is I’m peaceful, And I believe in the people." I believe that Thoreau would strongly agree with Lupe Fiasco in this line about being peaceful and also being optimistic about having belief in the people. A great example of self-reliance and nonviolent resistance is the lines "A rebel in your thoughts, aint gon make it halt, If you don’t become an actor you’ll never be a factor." In these lines Lupe Fiasco says that if you don't take action, then nothing will get done. You cannot just think about change in your head, you must actually go do it. This is something Thoreau pushed very hard for when he said that one man could make a difference. In the third verse Lupe Fiasco says "I think that all the silence is worse than all the violence" which is also a great example of self-reliance. No one taking action would be worse than people being arrested and such for trying to make a change. Thoreau would strongly agree with the lyrics of this song and would be happy to see someone shares his ideas.

Mosh - Eminem

Mosh

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
And to the Republic for which it stands
One nation under God
Indivisible with liberty and justice for all...
It feels so good to be back..

I scrutinize every word, memorize every line
I spit it once, refuel, re-energize and rewind
I give sight to the blind, my insight through the mind
I exercise my right to express when I feel it's time
It's just all in your mind, what you interpret it as
I say to fight, you take it as I'mma whip someone's ass
If you don't understand, don't even bother to ask
A father who has grown up with a fatherless past
Who has blown up now to rap phenomenon that has
Or at least shows no difficulty multi-task
And in juggling both perhaps mastered his craft
Slash entrepreneur who has helped launch a few more rap acts
Who's had a few obstacles thrown his way through the last half
Of his career typical manure moving past that
Mr. kisses ass crack, he's a class act
Rubber band man, yea he just snaps back

[Chorus:]
Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness
As I provide just enough spark that we need to proceed
Carry on, give me hope, give me strength
Come with me and I won't steer you wrong
Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog
To the light at the end of the tunnel
We gonna fight, we gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march
Through the swamp, we gonna mosh through the marsh
Take us right through the doors (c'mon)

All the people up top on the side and the middle
Come together lets all bomb and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people some white and some black
Don't matter what color, all that matters we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause don't matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us they can't, we stronger now more than ever
They tell us no we say yea, they tell us stop we say go
Rebel with a rebel yell, raise hell we gonna let em know
Stomp, push, shove, mush, Fuck Bush, until they bring our troops home (c'mon)

[Chorus]

Imagine it pouring, it's raining down on us
Mosh pits outside the oval office
Someone's tryina tell us something,
Maybe this is God just sayin' we're responsible
For this monster, this coward,
That we have empowered
This is Bin Laden, look at his head noddin'
How could we allow something like this without pumping our fists
Now this is our final hour
Let me be the voice in your strength and your choice
Let me simplify the rhyme just to amplify the noise
Try to amplify the times it, and multiply by six...
Teen million people, Are equal at this high pitch
Maybe we can reach alqueda through my speech
Let the president answer a higher anarchy
Strap him with an Ak-47, let him go, fight his own war
Let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil
No more psychological warfare, to trick us to thinking that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country, we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes its all lies
The stars and stripes, they've been swiped, washed out and wiped
And replaced with his own face, Mosh now or die
If I get sniped tonight you know why,
Cause I told you to fight.

[Chorus]

And as we proceed,
To Mosh through this desert storm,
In these closing statements, if they should argue
Let us beg to differ
As we set aside our differences
And assemble our own army
To disarm this Weapon of Mass Destruction
That we call our President, for the present
And Mosh for the future of our next generation
To speak and be heard
Mr. President, Mr. Senator
Do you guy's hear us...hear us...[laughing] (Hailie)

Eminem shows traits of Transcendentalism in his song "Mosh." He shows the traits nonviolent resistance, self-reliance, and nonconformity which all relate to Thoreau. The chorus is a great example which says "Come along follow me as I lead through the darkness, As I provide just enough spark that we need to proceed, Carry on, give me hope, give me strength, Come with me and I won't steer you wrong, Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the fog, To the light, at the end of the tunnel, We gonna fight, we gonna charge, we gonna stomp, we gonna march, Through the swamp, we gonna mosh through the marsh, Take us right through the doors (c'mon)." The chorus shows nonconformity and self-reliance in Eminem's leadership and willingness to go against the government to do what he believes. Its an example of nonviolent resistance in Eminem wanting to protest the government and make a resistance, and he did this through a song. The line "They ain't gonna stop us they can't, we stronger now more than ever" is a great example of self-reliance and nonviolent resistance. It shows self-reliance by saying that he can't be stopped and nonviolent resistance by saying they are now stornger than ever. In his third verse Eminem says "If I get sniped tonight you know why, Cause I told you to fight." This is an example of self-reliance in how Eminem is willing to do whatever it takes in order to have change. He is even willing to die in order to have this change occur even though he is doing nothing but saying what he feels. Thoreau would strongly agree with this in how one man is willing to do whatever he can to get change, no matter what the cost is. It shows Thoreau's idea that one man can make a change when others notice. Eminem is trying to get others to notice through this song and make a change.
